Who better to take advantage of the potential expanded 2011 NFL training camp rosters than the NBA's smallest player?
With rosters likely growing larger so as to accommodate a truncated camp and potentially out-of-shape starters, Oklahoma City guard Nate Robinson (pictured above, playing free safety on Kevin Durant) is hoping to talk his way into trying out with an NFL team. Though Nate stands at barely 5-9, he did play one year as a powerful member of the University of Washington's secondary. More telling, Nate is the son of a college football player, and he originally attended the university on a football scholarship.
In an interview with Tzvi Twerski at SLAM, Nate explained why, exactly, an NFL team would want to bring in a diminutive former freshman safety:
"Why wouldn't you want to have an NBA player that can play football try out? That's a lot of publicity for your organization."
Yes, leave it to Nate Robinson to pick the one line of employment during the NBA's lockout that is actually already locked out. Everyone else goes and plays poker or runs a fast food joint or plays overseas, but Nate wants to join the ranks of the already-not-working. Also, while assuming that an NFL team -- in a league that would lead off the top of the hour on "SportsCenter" with labor news even if two no-hitters were thrown that day -- needs "publicity."
